UN Security Council extends UNDOF mandate on Golan Heights

(MENAFN) The UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 2782 on Monday, extending the mandate of the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) on the Golan Heights for six months, through December 31, 2025.

The resolution reiterates the obligation of both Israel and Syria to fully respect the terms of the 1974 ceasefire agreement. It urges both sides to exercise maximum restraint and prevent any violations within the ceasefire lines and the buffer zone.

The Council also tasked the UN Secretary-General with ensuring that UNDOF is equipped with the necessary capacity and resources to carry out its mission safely and effectively.

UNDOF was established in May 1974 after Israel and Syria agreed to disengage their forces, ending the 1973 Yom Kippur War. Its main role is to monitor the ceasefire and maintain peace in the region.
