UN Chief Alarmed by Violent Clashes in Syria’s Druze Region

(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed profound alarm over the ongoing violent clashes in Syria’s Suweida governorate, a region predominantly inhabited by Druze communities, where numerous casualties have been reported, including civilians. This was conveyed by Stephane Dujarric, the spokesperson for the UN chief, during a briefing on Tuesday.

“He is disturbed by reports of arbitrary killings of civilians, sectarian incitement, and looting of private property. He condemns all violence against civilians, especially acts that risk inflaming sectarian tensions,” Dujarric stated.

The UN Secretary-General is calling on Syria’s interim government and local officials to act swiftly to reduce tensions, safeguard civilians, restore order, and halt any further provocations. He also demands a transparent investigation into these violations and insists that those accountable be brought to justice.

Guterres additionally voiced his apprehension regarding Israeli airstrikes within Syrian borders, urging Israel to respect Syria’s sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, Dujarric reported.

“The Secretary-General underscores that it is imperative to support a credible, orderly and inclusive political transition in Syria in line with the key principles of resolution 2254 (2015),” he added.
