Druze leader in Syria declares followers as “inseparable part of Israel”
Al-Hijri made the statements in an interview published Tuesday, asserting that the relationship with Israel is “international and of critical importance.” He added that Israel is “the only guarantor and the party authorized to shape future arrangements,” despite its repeated military operations in the region.
“We see ourselves as an inseparable part of the existence of the State of Israel. This relationship is international and of critical importance,” al-Hijri said.
He also advocated for Suwayda to achieve “full independence,” with a transitional period of self-rule under the supervision of an external guarantor, which he suggested should be Israel. Al-Hijri described this as a path toward “division and the establishment of autonomous governance alongside independence,” claiming it would ensure “a better future for minorities and regional stability across the Middle East.”
The Druze community in Suwayda has multiple religious authorities, including Hammoud Yahya al-Hinnawi and Yusuf Jarbou’, whose positions sometimes differ. Followers of al-Hijri constitute a minority and are not seen as representing the broader Druze population in the province.
In his interview, al-Hijri criticized the Syrian government, calling it “the most brutal” and alleging it is “a direct extension of al-Qaeda.” He also defended Israel’s violations of Syrian sovereignty, stating: “It is no secret that Israel was the only country in the world that intervened militarily,” framing these actions as protective measures for Druze communities.
