Turkey hails Syrian ceasefire, hopes for lasting peace

(MENAFN) Türkiye voices approval of the ceasefire announced in Syria on Tuesday, with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan saying the pause in fighting raises hopes for a lasting outcome that prevents further loss of life, as stated by reports.

Addressing members of his Justice and Development (AK) Party in parliament, Erdogan reiterates that Ankara has consistently and firmly supported the continuation of Syria as a unified country, emphasizing the importance of safeguarding its territorial wholeness and political cohesion.

According to official statements, the Syrian presidency confirms that an agreement is reached with the YPG/SDF, giving the group four days to outline a plan for the practical integration of Hasakah, while maintaining a ceasefire throughout that period. The YPG/SDF later declares in a statement that it fully adheres to the truce.

Erdogan cautions that any move toward provocation in Syria from this stage onward would “amount to suicide,” underlining the need to preserve calm and stability.

He notes that comprehensive integration across Syria would “usher in a new era,” adding that Syrian Kurds would be the primary beneficiaries of a stable environment.

“We have no interest in the territory of any country and do not interfere in the internal affairs of any nation, but we will not allow our country’s interests to be compromised,” Erdogan says.

The Turkish leader also mentions that he held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump, during which they discussed multiple topics, including issues “that will contribute to Syria’s security,” such as coordinated actions against ISIS, also known as Daesh.
