Netherlands Sees Rise in Rejected Asylum Applications

(MENAFN) The Netherlands rejected a majority of asylum applications in 2025, with refusals surpassing approvals and marking a 56% increase compared with the previous year, according to data released Monday.

The Dutch Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) processed 15,550 initial asylum decisions last year, rejecting 8,120 applications while approving 7,430, reports indicate. Overall, the total number of initial decisions fell 27% compared with 2024.

Statistics also show a sharp decline in residence permits granted under subsidiary protection, with around 2,900 people receiving such permits in 2025—a 70% drop from the prior year. The number of individuals granted full refugee status fell 35% to 3,400, while permits issued on humanitarian grounds increased by 35%.

Decisions involving Syrian asylum seekers declined significantly as well. The IND issued only 390 decisions on Syrian cases in 2025, granting permits in 28% of them, compared with 10,700 decisions in 2024, of which 95% were approved.

The data highlight a notable tightening of asylum approvals in the Netherlands amid an overall reduction in processed applications.
