UN Report Reveals ISIS Assassination Plots Against Syrian President
The information was outlined in the 22nd report of the secretary-general concerning the threat posed by ISIS to global peace and security, compiled in collaboration with the UN Counter-Terrorism Office, a media outlet reported on Wednesday.
According to the document, Al-Sharaa was designated a primary target, along with Interior Minister Anas Khattab and Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani.
The report disclosed that two assassination schemes against the president were executed in the cities of Aleppo and Daraa by Saraya Ansar al-Sunnah, an organization not officially designated by the UN but believed to function as a proxy for ISIS.
This structure granted the faction plausible deniability while strengthening its operational capabilities, the report noted.
Although counterterrorism campaigns have been ongoing, Syria’s security landscape continues to be unstable, the report emphasized, with ISIS cells still active throughout the nation.
Most assaults were aimed at security personnel, particularly in the northern and northeastern regions, including one attack directed at coalition troops jointly commanded by Syria and the US.
The report further stated that ISIS attempted to exacerbate sectarian divisions in an effort to undermine national institutions, including by coordinating attacks on places of worship.
