Syria halts Aleppo airport operations after SDF attacks

(MENAFN) Syria announced on Tuesday a temporary suspension of flights to and from Aleppo International Airport following assaults carried out by the SDF terrorist group.

The General Authority of Civil Aviation stated that all flights would be halted for 24 hours, effective immediately, to safeguard passengers, crews, and airport operations. During this period, scheduled flights will be redirected to Damascus International Airport while technical and security assessments are conducted in coordination with relevant authorities.

The aviation body described the suspension as “precautionary and temporary,” adding that further updates would be provided once the period ends or if new developments occur.

Passengers were urged to check with their airlines for updated flight information.

The attacks in Aleppo resulted in the deaths of a Syrian soldier and four civilians, including a child, with several others injured, according to reports.

The SDF is primarily led by the YPG, which is recognized as the Syrian branch of the PKK terrorist organization. In March, the Syrian presidency announced an agreement for integrating the SDF into state institutions, emphasizing the country’s territorial unity and rejecting any attempts at division. Syrian officials assert that in the months since, the SDF has made no efforts to comply with the terms of the accord.
